![]() Would you support a statutory change that would allow hunters 55 years of age or older to use a crossbow for hunting without the need to obtain medical proof of a disability? Background: This was Conservation Congress Advisory Question 86 in this year's spring hearings questionnaire. This question received 2,014 votes for and 1,767 against. Currently, the law allows senior hunters age 65 and older to use a crossbow for hunting without the need of a special crossbow permit or disabled permit. However, hunters age 55 and older, due to issues such as arthritis, bursitis, injuries and other ailments may choose to give up bowhunting rather than go through the effort of getting the medical exam necessary to obtain a special permit. Propoents of the change feel that allowing crossbows to be used by those 55 years of age and older would increase the number of hunters in this age group who would choose to continue to archery hunt. Those opposed to this proposal see lowering the age as detrimental to the sport of archery by increasing the number of these advanced weapons in use during the archery season. Read more ...

7 state fishing records fall in first five months of 2010MADISON – State fishing records are falling fast -- literally with a “thunk” -- as anglers have been hauling in a boatload of true lunkers. By June 1, seven new state fish records had been confirmed in 2010 in the “alternate methods" category. The fish ranged from 4 pounds to more than 200 pounds, and the longest stretched more than seven feet long. Six of the seven were taken with a bow and arrow, one with a spear, and one new record was only on the books for a month before it was eclipsed. ![]() “Bowfishing seems to be growing in popularity and our record books are starting to reflect that trend,” says Karl Scheidegger, the DNR fish biologist who coordinates the state record fish program. “More people are learning about the alternate methods category and seem to be targeting those records.” Bowfishing involves using specialized archery equipment to target carp, drum, burbot and the like during an open season that coincides with the statewide spearing seasons. The Guide to Wisconsin Spearing, Netting, and Bait Harvest Regulations 2010-2011 can be found on the fishing regulations page of the DNR website. Fish Records and Record Holders The parade of record fish, and the people who landed them, are listed with the most recent first (following links exit DNR to WiscFish website, a collaborative effort by the Wisconsin DNR, University of Wisconsin Center for Limnology and University of Wisconsin Sea Grant):

![]() Should hunters be allowed to quarter a deer carcass before registering it to facilitate carrying it out of the woods? Background: Question 12 in the Spring DNR Rules Hearings read: Do you favor allowing hunters to divide deer, bear and elk into as many as five parts for the purpose of removing the animal from the field? The head must remain attached to one of the other parts of a deer or bear and only one divided deer or bear could be stored or transported. The head would not need to be attached to another section of an elk. This question passed by a vote of 2,721 in favor and 1,175 opposed. Read more ... | |||||||||||||||||||||

Free Fishing Weekend in Wisconsin June 5-6 MADISON People of all ages can fish free in Wisconsin on June 5 and 6, the state's Free Fishing Weekend. More than two dozen free fishing clinics statewide during that weekend and free loaner equipment available from 50 state parks and offices will help make it even easier for people to take advantage of this opportunity, state aquatic education officials say. ![]() We want everybody to give fishing a try, and Free Fishing Weekend's a great time to do it, says Theresa Stabo, DNR's aquatic education coordinator. Every day is free fishing day for kids 15 and under, so it's nice for their parents, friends and older teenagers to take advantage of Free Fishing Weekend to fish for the first time, or return to it. All waters of the state are open, including Wisconsin waters of Lake Michigan, Lake Superior and rivers bordering Wisconsin. Residents and nonresidents of all ages can fish without a fishing license (or trout or salmon stamps) over these two days. However, all other fishing regulations apply, including how many fish anglers can keep and limits on the minimum size of fish they can keep. More than two dozen fishing clinics offered Free fishing clinics some aimed at kids and some intended for the whole family are set for more than two dozen locations across the state. Some of the clinics are sponsored by Wisconsin State Parks, but most are put on by local fishing and conservation clubs. We're really excited that there are more clinics than usual, and that some of them are targeted at families, says Rachel Piacenza, DNR aquatic education associate. If you're an adult new to fishing, don't feel embarrassed to attend an event! This weekend is really about introducing people of all ages to fishing. If you're an avid angler, consider taking an adult who has never fished before. Share your passion with someone else; you're sure to remember that smile when the first fish is reeled in. Fishing rods and reels available for loan from 50 DNR locations Many of the fishing clinics provide all the equipment people need to fish. But people who cannot or do not want to attend a clinic can borrow fishing equipment from dozens of DNR state parks and offices. Call ahead to the listed contact people to make sure equipment is available, and to arrange to pick the equipment up as DNR service centers are open limited hours.
