Should everyday anglers be allowed to cull fish just as tournament anglers will now be allowed to cull bass?

BACKGROUND: Wisconsin governor to sign bass culling bill

Madison, Wis. (AP) – Gov. Scott Walker says he'll sign a bill that would reshape Wisconsin bass tournament rules.

The Republican-backed measure would legalize culling, the practice of catching a fish and temporarily keeping it alive, then throwing it back after catching a larger one. It's illegal in Wisconsin but the bill would create an exemption for bass tournaments.

The bill's chief sponsor, Rep. Joel Kleefisch, an Oconomowoc Republican, says the change will draw larger tournaments to the state and pump up local economies.

Both the Senate and Assembly passed the bill earlier this month. Walker says he'll sign the bill Friday morning at the Golden Mast Inn on Okauchee Lake in Oconomowoc.

If this practice is OK for bass tournament anglers, should it also be OK for ordinary fishermen at other times?

Wild Wisconsin elk are expanding their range – with a little help from their friends

HAYWARD – This is the calving season for Wisconsin’s small but growing elk herd and biologists with the state Department of Natural Resources, joined by a small army of volunteers, are busy searching the woods for newborns.

The search is expanded this year because a dozen of Wisconsin’s wild elk, all young animals, were trapped this past winter and were moved to an “acclimation pen” 10 miles distant from the main herd as the crow flies.

That pen – a black plastic wall that surrounded 2.3 acres of forest around Clam Lake – was breached this past Wednesday by DNR biologists who quickly retreated after leaving piles of alfalfa outside the opening. This allowed the wary elk to wander out into their new territory, undisturbed by humans.

BHS Demons repeat at Wisconsin State High School Trapshoot

Mayville, WI -- May 13th, 14th & 15th. The Burlington High School Demons Trapshooting team completed the "three-peat" by winning the 39th Annual Wisconsin State High School Trapshoot sponsored by the Horicon Marsh Sportsman's Club in Mayville WI.

The event is the largest clay target event held in the State of Wisconsin with 146 squads participating over three days of competition. The five-member teams each shoot four 25-bird rounds with the team breaking the most targets coming home victorious.

All of the young athletes had to overcome very windy conditions over the three days of the competition with the BHS Demons #1 squad of Adam Tunstra, Myles Walker, Jordan Hintz, Ethan Kerr and Sam Kafura breaking 448 out of 500 targets to claim the top prize for the third consecutive year. Demons #3 finished fourth to earn runner up in Class AA and all told, five of Burlington High' School's squads finished in the top twenty-five.

For the second consecutive year the Demons also produced the individual Grand Champion with Myles Walker [shown above receiving his award] taking home the gold breaking 97 of 100 targets. Senior Adam Tunstra claimed the runner-up award with an impressive score of 96.
