INSTANT SURVEY VOTE ON - POLL s529:

Do you agree with the emergency rule that prohibits bowhunters from shooting antlerless deer in 19 DMUs that are more than 20 percent below their population goal levels?

Background: Traditionally, bowhunters have been allowed to take a deer of either sex in any Deer Management Unit (DMU) in the state. Many hunters, however, believe that in DMUs where gun hunters are not allowed to take antlerless deer the same rule should apply to bowhunters. An emergency rule has been enacted to that effect in 19 DMUs.

In a recent issue of Wisconsin Outdoor News, Tim Eisele writes:

It's here. "No bow doe" rules will be in place for 19 deer units this fall.

Antlerless deer carcass tags issued this fall with archery hunting licenses will only be allowed to be used in deer units where an antlerless deer quota exists.

Master planning begins for Sandhill, Wood County and Meadow Valley state wildlife areas

EAU CLAIRE – The state Department of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, to initiate master planning for the Sandhill, Meadow Valley and Wood County wildlife areas.

The purpose of the meeting is to announce the planning process, invite public participation, share information and gather public comments on the future management of these properties, referred to collectively as the Sandhill-Meadow Valley work unit.

The informal, open house meeting takes place at the Sandhill Wildlife Area Outdoor Skills Center, 1715 CTH ‘X', Babcock. Anyone with an interest is encouraged to attend. DNR staff will be available to discuss the properties and the planning process and to answer any questions. There will be informational displays.

The master plan, intended to guide development and management for the next 15 years or more, will describe future management strategies and recreational opportunities. DNR staff has prepared a regional and property analysis and a preliminary statement of vision and goals for the properties.

One focus of the meeting is to present this information and ask for public input on these visions and goals and to identify any issues to be explored during the planning process.

These documents – along with maps, a public participation plan and other background information – will be available for review at the meeting. The information can also be viewed online.

Those without Internet access can view the draft regional and property analysis at the Sandhill Wildlife Area, at the Eau Claire or Wisconsin Rapids service centers or at the public libraries in Wisconsin Rapids, Pittsville and Necedah.

Comments or questions about any of these documents can be offered at the public meeting, submitted online at the planning website, or submitted by:
