Should the  Youth Hunt, Learn to Hunt and Mentored Hunt be consolidated into one New Hunter Opportunity with one set of rules?

Background: Are youth hunting opportunities getting too complicated to keep track of? Currently, Wisconsin offers three special hunts for youth and novice hunters:

1. Youth Hunts for spring turkey, waterfowl and deer precede the regular open season and allow hunters ages 12-15 who are Hunter Education graduates to hunt with adult supervision and with no competition from older hunters.

2. Learn To Hunt (LTH) events for most game species may be scheduled at any time during the year. LTH events involve four hours of training, hands-on shooting, and a one- or two-day hunt that pairs a novice hunter of any age with a mentor who has at least five years experience hunting the species in question. Hunter education is not required prior to participating.

3. The Mentored Hunt program allows any novice hunter age 10 or older to hunt any species during the regular season for that species under the close supervision of a licensed adult hunter. Only one weapon is allowed, and the mentor must remain within arm's reach or the hunter.

Hunters Network of Wisconsin launched at Wisconsin Hunting Heritage Conference

A new program designed to help recruit and retain hunters was unveiled at the Wisconsin Hunting Heritage Conference Feb. 20 in Rothschild, Wisconsin.

The Hunters' Network of Wisconsin (HNW) is dedicated to helping hunting and wildlife conservation organizations recruit and retain new hunters in order to maintain Wisconsin's hunting heritage, along with the social, environmental and economic benefits it provides.

HNW will use online technology to provide new hunters, mentors and youth with resources and information about mentored hunting and provide a forum in which new hunters and their mentors can share their hunting experiences and connect with others who share their interests in hunting.

“This is an exciting new program that we hope will help recruit new hunters and mentors,” said WDNR chief warden Randy Stark.

HNW is a partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The program is funded by the Pittman-Robertson (PR) Wildlife Restoration Act, a federal program to the states for wildlife conservation programs. PR funds are generated by an excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition.

Top DNR job remains in governor’s control

Gov. Jim Doyle won a major victory on Tuesday when the Assembly failed to override his veto of a bill that would have weakened the governor's control over the Department of Natural Resources. Read full story...
